Earthbound Farm® / Natural Selection Foods
San Juan Bautista, California
Yuma, Arizona
SubZero provided refrigeration and thermal construction solutions to Earthbound
Farm / Natural Selection Foods for salad and organic produce processing plants on
fast-track construction schedules. Refrigeration construction of a 1500 ton engine
room in San Juan Bautista and a 2200 ton engine room in Yuma, including start-up,
was completed in only three months. Each system is expandable to 2200 and 3700 tons
respectively. These facilities total over 300,000 square feet of 35°F processing,
storage, dock and packaging areas, built with exterior wall and roof panels. Each
facility has been master planned for extensive future growth.
In the San Juan Bautista facility, a two-temperature, 1750 hp central ammonia refrigeration
system was installed to provide cooling for their produce storage, dock and packaging
areas as well as chilled water for the processing lines. The system is designed
to minimize overall energy consumption using two temperature levels. Based on this
design, PG&E provided the owner with a sizable rebate.
A customized Allen Bradley PLC control system monitors and controls refrigeration
motors, ammonia sensors, room temperatures, and emergency fire protection sequences,
as well as the processing line equipment. The system has been integrated with an
AB Intellicenter motor control center to provide a more advanced control solution.
SubZero collaborated with the project team in OSHA PSM and CalARP/RMP during start-up
and following construction. SubZero also provided ammonia awareness and safety training
for operators and local Fire Department personnel.
Natural Selection Foods, with over 24,000 certified organic acres, is America's
largest supplier of both specialty salads and organic produce, with a line of over
200 innovative, delicious and healthy products. Their organic salads and produce
are marketed under the nationally recognized Earthbound Farm brand.
