M&M Mars - Aspen Distribution
Victorville, California
SubZero provided specialty design/build services to M&M Mars for a greenfield
450,000 square foot candy storage distribution facility with 40 feet of clear height
on a fast-track construction schedule. Cold storage and refrigeration construction
was completed in five months. This facility has 150,000 square feet of 40°F cold
storage and 300,000 square feet of 70°F storage, dock and packaging areas located
in Southern California's high desert. Product quality control standards mandate
a 50% relative humidity in the storage area.
Full-height urethane insulated wall panels line the tilt-up walls along the entire
facility to reduce energy consumption during summer. Thermal construction also included
fast-acting cold storage doors, insulated night doors, and motorized dock doors.
A 1200 hp central ammonia refrigeration system was installed to provide cooling
and humidity control for the storage, dock and packaging areas. The system is designed
to reduce overall energy consumption using variable frequency drives on all condenser
and air unit fan motors. Based on the refrigeration system design, Edison provided
a $150,000 rebate. A state of the art computer control system controls all variable
frequency drives, ammonia sensors, room temperatures, room humidity, and emergency
fire protection sequences.
CalARP/PSM and seismic studies were provided as part of the engineering services
for the project. Following construction, SubZero provided ammonia awareness and
safety training for operators and local Fire Department personnel.
Victorville's first-ever ammonia refrigeration facility, operated by Aspen
Distribution, opened in January of 2002.
