Florexpo
Carlsbad, California
This 74,000 square foot tenant improvement to an existing warehouse utilized SubZero's
fast-track capabilities. Total refrigeration construction time from the initiation
of engineering to Florexpo's move-in was three months.
Construction included an 18,000 square foot +34°F floral cooler and an 8,000 square
foot +34°F bouquet preparation cooler each with tight humidity control. Temperature
and relative humidity is maintained at 95% (+/- 2%) by coupling low velocity air
units mounted to the ceiling with a high-pressure fog humidity system. In addition
to microclimate control, the refrigeration system provides chilled water to support
the preparation of cut flowers. Air units and water chiller are supported by a light
industrial refrigeration skid with semi-hermetic screw compressors and evaporative
condensing.
The Florexpo farm, located in Costa Rica, is a model of efficiency, relying on the
latest protocols to grow hardy, disease-free plants in high volume. It covers over
80 acres and includes 30 miles of benches devoted to URC production. With about
360 US employees, Florexpo provides flowers to mass-market retailers such as Costco,
Wal-Mart, Albertsons and Safeway from its new Carlsbad, CA location. Construction
was completed in October of 2004.
