DeKalb County Schools
Decatur, Georgia
Plagued with failing metal siding at their Redan and Stone Mountain high schools,
the DeKalb County Board of Education sought to replace the siding and improve the
exterior appearance of the schools. SubZero Constructors was the successful bidder
in a public bid process to replace the existing siding with new architectural flat
insulated metal panels at both schools.
School board officials were faced with performing the renovation projects during
the school year while classes were in session. SubZero collaborated with the school
board and the schools' principles to schedule the work for minimal interruption
of classes and to ensure that very strict safety standards were adhered to during
construction.
The two schools utilized a total of 81,000 square feet of architectural insulated
panels. By architectural siding industry standards, this was quite a substantial
project. "Red Brick" colored panels were utilized at Stone Mountain High School
while Redan High School chose "Sandstone" colored panels. This challenging installation
included structural steel support beams for the new panels, roofing demolition and
replacement, and many "pop outs" at every school entrance.
DeKalb County has a population of over 660,000 people situated near Metropolitan
Atlanta. For the first fifty years following DeKalb County's establishment in 1823,
all schools were private. Today there are over 100,000 students in DeKalb County's
public schools, where the primary goal is to give each child an outstanding education.
There are currently 84 elementary schools, 19 middle schools, 21 high schools, and
19 specialized centers.
